The Transformative Justice Coalition and the Voting Rights Alliance, in honor of Black History Month, are reviving the daily special series devoted to sharing the legacies and stories of the sheroes, heroes, and events in the fight for Black suffrage. This series was created in 2017 and added 4 NEW articles this year, and several newly revised ones. In addition to these daily newsletters all February long, this series also incorporates daily social media posts; an interactive calendar; and, website blog posts to spread the word broadly.

Thank you for following our #VRABlackHistory series, where for 28 days we have honored, recognized, and educated about a person, organization, or event, spanning over 5 centuries and told in chronological order about those moments that forever changed the movement for African-American suffrage. Barbara Arnwine insisted that we could not skip this year of Black History! The Transformative Justice Coalition thanks those who have been republishing our articles, on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, your websites, and even in the Tennessee Tribune. Over these past 28 days, these Black History emails have been opened over 65,000 times, with over 600 individual clicks over. You have responded with corrections and more information and asks to republish the series, and express your thanks. We want to extend our gratitude for your appreciation of the history this series shares.

2022 Georgia Voter Education and Mobilization Campaign Volunteer Form

Second Time Around: Volunteer for the nonpartisan December 6th, 2022 Georgia Runoff Elections Voter Engagement Campaign

All roads are leading to Georgia and it seems like everyone is on the Midnight Train or the first airplane! We are coordinating with groups in Georgia to help ensure this is a fair election process and to turn out the vote in areas with low voter turn out, among other things. Sign up with our form to join a non-partisan committees dedicated to #Georgia as we #FinishTheJob of protecting voters. Committees incl: phone banking and texting; on-the-ground canvassing; rides to the polls; communications and media (which includes social media and outreach); votercading; and, HBCU outreach.

Shockingly, despite the criticality of this election, to the future direction of the U.S. Senate, there remain millions of Georgians who are clueless not only that there is an election but that they are eligible to participate in the election. Exacerbating this already troubling scenario is a new campaign of purposeful disinformation, some new voter suppression proposals aimed at voter registration by the Georgia Board of Elections, and racist appeals.

Every person in the United States can directly assist in ensuring that Georgia's voters are aware of and educated about the upcoming Senate runoff race.

To help accomplish these goals, The Transformative Justice Coalition (TJC) along with partners Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda; Hip Hop Caucus; Rainbow PUSH Coalition; AFL-CIO ; National Bar Association; and, the NAACP of Georgia are seeking nonpartisan volunteers from throughout the nation to help and assist in several campaigns. Currently, TJC has several components of its Campaign to address needs that have been identified by our chief Georgia partner, The Georgia Coalition for the Peoples' Agenda, including organizing special voter outreach and Get Out The Vote events, on-the-ground canvassing, text and phone banking, absentee ballot assistance, youth engagement, senior engagement, votercades, social media campaigns, radio ads, public education, and much more. People can sign up for a committee at VotingRightsAlliance.org. Additionally, Daryl and Barbara will be operating on and off directly from Georgia beginning late November.

Choose below the tickets that apply for which committee you would like to join and then click the “register” button at the bottom of all the committees.

FROM THE NNPA NEWSWIRE:

“This last primary election showed that some of us were keeping ourselves from voting. There are 55 million unregistered Americans eligible to vote, and 10 million are African Americans,” said NNPA President and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. “What if those 10 million were registered? We wouldn’t have worried about Donald Trump or the craziness of what the U.S. Supreme Court is doing now. Elections have consequences. The overturned Roe v. Wade, the overturned gun laws – are consequences of elections.”

The Freedom to Vote Act Fact Sheet

The bill would protect our elections from interference, dark money, partisan gerrymandering, and voter suppression.

America is at a crossroads. We have reached an inflection point in which we must force our elected officials to act now or risk losing our republic.

On July 17, a year after John Lewis' passing, the Transformative Justice Coalition, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Public Citizen, Declaration For American Democracy and many others to call for nationwide candlelight vigils - Good Trouble Vigils for Democracy - to demand the passage of the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, DC Statehood and to not let the Jim Crow filibuster stand in the way.

Our democracy is under attack. We are approaching the six-month anniversary of the failed January 6th attack on our nation, anti-voter laws are being passed in states all over the country, the U.S. Supreme Court issued rulings further undermine our freedom to vote and limiting states ability to require large donors to disclose their campaign contributions.

And this Summer, Congressional districts risk being redrawn in a way that will allow politicians to choose their voters - rather than the voters fairly choosing who represents them.

But there is hope for us to stop this undercurrent of corruption and rebuild American democracy so that the freedom to vote is protected, billionaires don’t control our political systems, and our representatives actually respond to we the people.

On May 8th, 2021, we made some Good Trouble

The record turnout of Black, Brown, Asian, Native American and young voters in the 2020 elections and the 2021 Georgia U.S. Senate Run Off sparked a massive national backlash by state legislators introducing and passing racist laws to suppress their participation in elections.

As Voting Rights Alliance founder Barbara Arnwine says, “Injustice is trying to have a holiday!”

On May 8, 2021, a “John Lewis National Day of Action” ignited public support for restoring the effectiveness of the Voting Rights Act through S1, the For the People Act, HR1, and HR4. We also address one of the greatest obstacles to the passage of civil and voting rights - and one of the last vestiges of slavery - the filibuster!

In 2020 we were not silenced!

The elections of 2020 and the Georgia Senate run-off highlighted the ability of communities of color and young voters to overcome targeted, mean spirited voter suppression policies and legislation.

Voters turned out in record numbers even during the dangers of the COVID 19 pandemic, as Voting and Civil rights activists came together and fought against unprecedented attacks on free and fair elections.

We proved that, together, we can ensure all our voices are heard!

Thank you to all who joined the Georgia John Lewis Good Trouble Marches and Votercades!

In 2020 and 2021, the John Lewis ‘Good Trouble’ Votercade/Motorcade March Series throughout Georgia raised awareness, consciousness and determination for the community of color to vote, and sponsored similar actions across America for the general election.

Overcoming the hurdles of Georgia voter suppression was accomplished thanks to partnerships between the Transformative Justice Coalition, Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, Public Citizen, National Bar Association, Rainbow PUSH, Black Voters Matter and many other organizations.
